Let’s be honest – Sometimes you search for a particular blogger or somehow stumble upon the handle of a fellow blogger or maybe even a brand; and before getting to know anything about the person in question, before clicking on their blog link or even browsing through their timeline, you make a pre-judgement of how ‘well’ or ‘good’ the blogger is, based on the number of instagram followers they have.

I personally once tried collaborating with X but unfortunately I didn’t “Qualify”. Why because my Instagram follower count at the time was a bit too low. This made me slightly upset as I wondered why this was even a criteria. Yes I was a newbie to the scene but I considered myself to be a pretty decent blogger, with an active and interactive following and a lot to offer. However, after thinking a bit more about it I wondered… How else would X know how good I am?
It seems like social media is now a massive determining factor in the number of opportunities that come your way as a blogger and the way in which people value your work but still, should it be this way?

This just made me laugh really… Funny how someone recently said to me “Abeggi go and sit down, you this blogger with a 100 followers on IG”. To think the conversation we were having had nothing to do with blogging or instagram….

Hi Barakah! I can only imagine. It’s funny how even on a personal blogger, a person’s ‘worth’ is often times judged merely by the number of instagram followers they have…

I personally think it’s wrong for people to think that way. I mean, what does the number of followers you have have to do with the content of your blog right?

It definitely shouldn’t be like that, having a huge number of followers shouldn’t be a criteria. I think it has to do with our mentality and what bloggers have been labelled as in Nigeria over the years… To a number of people you really have to have a number of followers to proof to them that you are really in the business and you really know what’s up

These things get to “us”, I mean i am still new, trying to take the right steps, growing daily, taking all the necessary classes and i am not asking for tons of followers overnight but i don’t need people to tell me my blog aint nice because i don’t have such amount of followers…. or Question me about the number of subscribers i have which happens often…

    Evening,
I don’t think instagram followers count is an indication of how good a blogger is. Personally, I follow bloggers and blogs for their content, how much I can relate to it. And I find it easy to relate with a blogger with not much followers. I won’t be lost in the multitude. However most brands now, like Demi said are particular about number of followers when collaborating because they believe a large number of followers mean a further reach to more people.

I dont think it determines how good a blogger is, it’s all comes down to brands fault as they tend to favor bloggers with more followers and put pressure on young bloggers

Hmm… That’s new. I’ve never heard of people actually asking how many subscribers one has. Does this tend to be friends and family?

And yes… I COMPLETELY agree. I got to me so bad at one point, I actually thought of deleting my blog just because my follower count was really low.

So what I did was, I turned off all my instagram notifications so that I won’t see that only 5-10 people liked me post and then I just focused on my blog and content. Once I was completely confident about my blog I then started focusing on building my social media followers and becauseI turned off all my notifications, every time I logged in, there would be more than I expected.

What I was really trying to do was make sure that I wasn’t looking for ‘validation’ on my blog content by the number of people that liked my blog post, but that I was completely confident in myself and got to a point where whatever anyone said, I knew I was doing a great job… If you get what I mean
